2009 Initial Review On CEDAW (Consultation)

Introduction on the Review

Meeting Dates: 27 March 2009

Venue: Howard Civil Service International House (No.30, Sec. 3, Sinsheng S. Rd., Da’an Dist., Taipei City)

In 2006, the Taiwanese Government submitted to the Legislative Yuan a draft bill on the domestic implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and the bill was adopted in 2007. However, the application of ratification was not accepted and deposited by the UN Secretary-General. Nevertheless, the Government still produced the initial State Report on CEDAW in March 2009, and invited three international experts to participate in the International Review to give recommendations based on the the State Report. In comparison to the international review process of the UN Committee on CEDAW and the subsequently established international review process on the Two Covenants in Taiwan, this international conference was regarded as consultative. In other words, since the time was limited to further more profound dialogues and conversations, and there was no time and room left for any non-governmental organizations to take part, it was only the three international experts to provide opinions on their personal behalf.
